My Story
As a native of Independence, I am so proud of the spirit of the city where I was born, raised and educated. My journey is a testament to the values of hard work, resilience, and deep-rooted commitment to community.
My journey began with humble beginnings, where I learned the importance of financial responsibility from a very young age. Growing up in Independence, I attended Bryant Elementary, Palmer Junior High and proudly graduated from William Chrisman. It was there that I encountered mentors and counselors who recognized my potential and helped me pave a path to higher education.
Determined to pursue my dreams, I attended KU art school, financing my education through Pell Grants and student loans while juggling a part-time job at the student union. This period of my life instilled the values of hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to self-improvement.
Following my college journey, I embarked on a successful career in design and moved to Brookside, KCMO. I gained valuable experience at renowned organizations such as HOK Sport, Hallmark Cards, and Russell Stover Candies, honing my skills and making a mark in my field. I raised my daughter as a single-mom, and heavily relied on our Catholic school community for support and encouragement.
In late December 2008, I attended a high school Christmas party that would change my life forever. At the event, I reconnected with my high school friend Matt Wiley, and fell in love. This union led to me making a life-altering decision: moving back to the home Matt's grandparents built in Golden Acres, Independence.
Being back in my hometown was nothing short of a blessing for me. It inspired me to dedicate my life to the city that played an integral role in shaping my identity. Today, I am committed to the people of Independence and the city that provided me grace and support when I needed it most.
I understand the challenges and aspirations of the community I live in. My story is a testament to the belief that by working together, Independence can continue to thrive and prosper.
Join me on my continued journey of service and dedication to the city I proudly call home.
